Teaching Methods and Students’ Academic Performance in Financial Accounting in Secondary Schools, in Rivers State

Abstract

This paper focuses on teaching methods and students’ academic performance in financial accounting in secondary schools in Rivers state. In carrying out the study, a survey research was used. The study was carried out in five government Secondary schools in Ahoada East Local Government Area. The population of the study consisted of 230 teachers. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Random sampling was used to arrived at the sample size of 65 respondents .Mean with standard deviation was used for data analysis for this study. Result revealed that most teaching methods applied by teachers are difficult for the students’ to understand. Certain concepts in financial accounting. It was also shown that teachers are adequately trained but are not sensitive to practical materials. Based on the findings, the following conclusion where made: that government should employ persons that have adequate knowledge in the various teaching methods and appropriate application of instructional materials and equipment to enhance students academic performance in financial accounting in secondary schools.
